What is new in 2026 for Visakhapatnam?

Ask anyone who’s visited Visakhapatnam in the last few years and then come back in 2026, and they’ll tell you the same thing: the city feels different. Bigger cranes on the skyline, a shiny new airport, malls that wouldn’t look out of place in Bengaluru or Mumbai, and green medians where there used to be dusty patches. Vizag long loved for its beaches and the Eastern Ghats backdrop is now firmly in the middle of one of India’s most ambitious urban transformation stories. 

Here’s a deep dive into everything driving that changes this year. 

✈️  A New Gateway to the World: ASR International Airport 

The single biggest infrastructure story of 2026 has been aviation. On August 1, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram Andhra Pradesh’s first greenfield international airport since the state’s 2014 bifurcation, built at a cost of over ₹5,640 crore by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited (GVIAL) under a public-private partnership. 

Commercial operations formally began on August 17, 2026, when the IATA code “VTZ” was transferred from the old Visakhapatnam Airport (INS Dega) to the new facility, and airlines including IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, and Scoot began flying passengers in and out including the airport’s first international routes to Abu Dhabi and Singapore. 

A few numbers that show the scale of ambition: 

• 77,342 sq. m integrated passenger terminal with DigiYatra, e-gates, and self-service baggage drops 

• Initial capacity for 6 million passengers a year, scalable to over 40 million 

• A 3,800-metre runway capable of handling wide-body, long-haul aircraft 

• A dedicated cargo terminal designed to move 20,000 metric tonnes annually a big win for the region’s seafood, pharma, and agri-export industries 

Alongside the airport launch, the PM also laid foundation stones for ₹17,900 crore worth of other projects across the state, including a Visakhapatnam semiconductor plant and new highways reinforcing Vizag’s role as the anchor of North Andhra’s growth story. 

💻  The IT & AI Boom: Vizag’s Google Moment 

If 2026 will be remembered for one thing in Vizag’s tech story, it’s Google’s $15 billion AI hub the largest AI infrastructure investment Google is making anywhere outside the United States. 

The project broke ground in April 2026 across three campuses Tarluvada (266.6 acres), Adivivaram (160 acres), and Rambilli-Achyutapuram (174.8 acres) in partnership with AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel. It will deliver gigawatt-scale compute for AI training and inference, plus a brand-new international subsea cable gateway landing on India’s east coast, positioning Vizag as a major global connectivity hub. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian called it “an inflection point for the country’s AI-native future,” with commissioning targeted for July 2028. 

Google isn’t alone. TCS, Cognizant, Infosys, Wipro, and Adani have all secured or are expanding land allocations across Rushikonda, Madhurawada, Kapuluppada, and Anandapuram, and several Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are in the pipeline. To keep pace, the Andhra Pradesh IT Department has directed officials to prepare a dedicated master plan for IT parks, data centres, and GCCs across the Visakhapatnam Economic Region within 60 days, with Japanese consultancy Nippon Koei assisting on infrastructure planning including roads, commercial zones, and residential development around the new tech clusters. 

The city’s broader IT ecosystem is also thriving: Vizag is now home to over 150 software companies employing tens of thousands of professionals, with the “Data Center Capital of India” tag increasingly sticking thanks to the Google, Adani, Sify, TCS, and Reliance data centre investments converging here. 

(Worth noting: the scale of these data-centre incentives has also drawn scrutiny activist groups and legal experts have raised concerns over proposed power-distribution licences for the projects, so this is a space still evolving through 2026.) 

🚇  Metro Rail & Road Infrastructure: Untangling Vizag’s Traffic 

After more than a decade on paper, the Visakhapatnam Metro Rail (VMR) project has finally started moving. Phase 1 covers 46.23 km across three elevated corridors with 42 stations, at an estimated cost of roughly ₹6,250 crore (Phase 1) to ₹11,498 crore (full DPR estimate), with ~60% of funding expected from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

A standout engineering feature is a 20.16 km double-decker flyover-cum-viaduct stacking a road deck beneath the rail deck to add both transit and road capacity on the city’s most congested stretches. Public consultations for land acquisition began in February 2026, with over 70% of surveyed residents reportedly supportive of the project, and land acquisition targeted to begin by April 2026. Future expansion plans include a metro spur connecting Kommadi to the new Bhogapuram Airport. 

On the roads front, the state approved 88.35 km of new roads under a hybrid annuity model at an estimated cost of ₹307 crore, with a 10-year operations and maintenance phase built in for long-term upkeep plus footpaths, street lighting, greenery, and improved drainage as part of the package. 

🛒  Retail Revolution: Vizag’s Mall Boom 

Shopping in Vizag has been transformed almost overnight. The headline event was the March 27, 2026 opening of Inorbit Mall Visakhapatnam at Salagramapuram a 1.4-million-sq-ft development by K Raheja Corp, making it the largest mall in Andhra Pradesh and one of the biggest in South India. 

Delivered in a record 31 months in partnership with the Visakhapatnam Port Authority, the mall brought over 350 brands to the city for the first time including H&M, Shoppers Stop, Malabar Gold & Diamonds, an 8-screen AAA Cinemas multiplex, and five Family Entertainment Centres while creating roughly 3,000 direct and 10,000 indirect jobs. It was also designed around two 90-year-old heritage trees preserved on-site and holds pre-certification gold status under LEED. 

But Inorbit is just the start. Other major retail projects taking shape across the city in 2026 include: 

• Unity Mall (Rushikonda) a central government initiative promoting “One District, One Product” and GI-tagged Indian handicrafts, spanning 3.5 lakh sq. ft. across G+4 floors with a convention hall and mini-theatres, built with a ₹172 crore interest-free government loan. 

• ASN Megha Mall (Murali Nagar) a ₹243 crore mixed-use development with retail, office space, and a multiplex. 

• LuLu Mall (Harbour Park, Beach Road) a 13.5 lakh sq. ft. mega-mall proposed by the LuLu Group on a 13.74-acre site, expected to generate 5,000–8,000 jobs, part of the Group’s wider Andhra Pradesh investment push that also includes a food-processing plant and hypermarkets. 

• PM Ekta Mall featuring 99 One-District-One-Product items, targeted for completion by May 2026. 

🌳  Greener Vizag: Parks, Beautification & Urban Ecology 

Vizag’s civic body, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), has made 2026 a banner year for green cover. In July 2026, GVMC launched an ambitious drive to develop 50 new parks across the city 47 identified in the first phase alone at a cost of ₹21.97 crore, spread across the Bheemunipatnam (7), Madhurawada (20), and Gajuwaka (20) zones. Each will include walking tracks, open gyms, children’s play areas, landscaped gardens, and dedicated senior-citizen seating, explicitly framed around the vision of a “Green, Healthy and Liveable Vizag.” 

This builds on the city’s already-strong green assets the 23-year-old Biodiversity Park & Botanical Garden, home to over 2,000 plant species, remains a flagship green space, alongside VUDA Park, Kambalakonda Eco-Tourism Park, and Tenneti Park along the coast. 

Greenery has also become a matter of civic pride tied to Vizag’s growing role as an international host city. Ahead of the BRICS Youth Ministers’ Meeting in August 2026, GVMC undertook special beautification works from RK Beach outward enhancing greenery along central medians, beautifying 14 junctions between Maddilapalem and Bheemili, and carrying out extensive tree trimming and landscaping along key roads. Earlier in the year, the city spent roughly ₹34.85 crore on beautification for the International Fleet Review (IFR)–2026, covering roads, medians, footpaths, drainage, and lighting with over 90% classified as permanent infrastructure upgrades rather than temporary event dressing. A further push is now underway ahead of an International Partnership Summit planned for November 2026, with the GVMC Commissioner directing officials to develop “green islands,” increase junction greenery, and complete major beautification from RK Beach to Bheemunipatnam by mid-September. 

🏙️  Quality of Life: Smarter Governance, Healthcare & Everyday Living 

Beyond the headline projects, 2026 has brought a string of quieter but meaningful quality-of-life upgrades: 

• Smarter civic administration: GVMC restructured into a new 10-zone system (from 8) from January 1, 2026, adopting a “one zone—one constituency” model aimed at faster grievance redressal and better service delivery, particularly in fast-growing suburbs like Pendurthi and Bheemili. 

• AI-powered traffic management: An AI-based integrated traffic system has been piloted and is being extended to over 100 junctions, incorporating signal synchronisation, facial recognition, automatic number-plate recognition, and red-light violation detection. 

• Brighter, safer nights: With residents increasingly out until 11 pm–midnight, GVMC is boosting night-time sanitation staffing in commercial areas and replacing old incandescent streetlights with energy-efficient LED lighting. 

• Healthcare expansion: The Union government has approved upgrading Vizag’s ESIS Hospital into a full medical college, and a new 400-bed ESIC hospital (350 general + 50 super-specialty beds) is under construction at Sheelanagar at a cost exceeding ₹380 crore expanding tertiary care access for the region’s industrial workforce. 

• Global recognition: IMD’s Smart City Index 2026, which assesses 148 cities worldwide on quality of life, environment, and inclusiveness, continues to track Indian smart cities including Vizag as the Smart Cities Mission matures into its execution phase nationally. 

🌊  The Big Picture 

Put all these threads together a new international airport, a metro rail finally under construction, a $15-billion AI investment, South India’s biggest new mall, 50 fresh parks, and a civic body actively reshaping itself for a growing population and it’s clear 2026 isn’t just another year for Visakhapatnam. It’s the year the “City of Destiny” tag started to feel less like a slogan and more like a description. 

For residents, it means shorter commutes are coming, more green spaces to unwind in, world-class retail on the doorstep, and a fast-expanding job market anchored by global tech names. For visitors, it means a city that pairs its famous beaches and hills with genuinely modern, cosmopolitan infrastructure. 

Vizag’s transformation is far from finished the metro is still years from its first ride, several malls are still under construction, and the AI hub won’t be fully commissioned until 2028 but the direction is unmistakable.
