The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (popularly known as the Vizag Zoo) is one of the largest and most scenic zoological parks in India. Nestled amidst the Eastern Ghats and spread over a massive 625 acres, it offers a unique ecosystem where the hills meet the sea.

🗺️ Layout & Unique Geography
Established in 1972 and opened to the public in 1977, the park is beautifully situated within the Kambalakonda Reserve Forest.

The Scenic Setting: It is surrounded by lush green hills on three sides and faces the Bay of Bengal on the fourth side, ensuring a cool, refreshing maritime breeze throughout the year.
Dual Gate Access: The zoo features an intelligent design with two opposite gates—one opening toward National Highway 16 (Yendada side) and the other opening directly onto the scenic Beach Road (Sagar Nagar side).
🐆 Key Wildlife & Exhibits
The park houses over 80 to 120 species and nearly 850 animals kept in spacious, naturalistic enclosures designed to mimic their actual forest habitats. The zoo is categorized into distinct zones:

Carnivores & Felines: Home to Bengal Tigers (including rare leucistic/white tigers), Asiatic Lions, Indian Leopards, Jaguars, and Pumas.
Lesser Carnivores: Features active packs of Dholes (Asiatic Wild Dogs)—for which the zoo has an internationally recognized and award-winning breeding program accredited by WAZA—along with Striped Hyenas and Jackals.
Primates: An impressive collection including Ring-tailed Lemurs, Mandrills, Olive Baboons, Goeldi's Marmosets, and Common Langurs.
Herbivores: Massive expanses dedicated to Indian Elephants, Giraffes, Hippopotamuses, Greater One-horned Rhinoceroses, Zebras, Gaur (Indian Bison), and various deer species like Sambar, Spotted Deer, and the rare Eld's Deer.
Reptiles & Serpentarium: An open-air serpentarium housing Python species, land tortoises, monitor lizards, and all three native Indian crocodilians: Mugger crocodiles, Gharials, and Saltwater crocodiles.
Aviary & Butterfly Park: A delightful walkthrough section featuring colorful Macaws, Ostriches, Rosy Pelicans, Painted Storks, and a specialized morning-access Butterfly Park.

 Visitor Facilities & Attractions
Because the zoo is incredibly vast, exploring it completely on foot covers a 4 to 5 km trek along undulating, hilly terrain.

Internal Transport: To make transit easier, the zoo provides eco-friendly battery-operated vehicles (golf carts) and bicycle rentals.

The "Bioscope" Education Center: Features an auditorium and a dedicated wildlife library designed to educate visitors and student groups on regional biodiversity conservation.
Amenities: Shaded walking paths, multiple rest shelters, clean restrooms, drinking water kiosks, a children's play park, and light refreshment stalls are distributed across the campus.
