Dolphin's Nose Lighthouse, Vizag
Dolphin's Nose Lighthouse is one of the most iconic landmarks and scenic tourist attractions in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh. Located on the spectacular Dolphin's Nose hill, the lighthouse stands on a massive rocky headland between Yarada and Gangavaram Port. The hill gets its name because its distinctive shape resembles the nose of a dolphin.
The hill rises to about 358 metres above sea level, while the rocky headland itself is around 174 metres high. From the lighthouse area, visitors can enjoy impressive views of the Bay of Bengal, Visakhapatnam Port, Gangavaram Port, coastline and surrounding hills. It is particularly attractive for photography and for visitors interested in Vizag's maritime history.
🏛️ Historical Importance
The Dolphin's Nose Lighthouse has an important connection with the maritime history of Visakhapatnam. The lighthouse was commissioned on 15 June 1957 and was inaugurated by Lal Bahadur Shastri, who was then Minister of Transport and Communications. Its powerful beacon helps guide ships approaching Visakhapatnam Port.
The hill itself also has historical significance. During the British period, the area was used as a military camp, and the Battle of Vizagapatam in 1804 took place near the hill.
