The Visakhapatnam Campus of IMU was created in November 2008, by amalgamation of the National Ship Design and Research Centre (NSDRC). NSDRC was set up in 1991 as a research centre to fulfil the demands of the government and industry in the fields of ship procurement, shipbuilding, and ship design. The Visakhapatnam Campus of IMU has two locations, with the main campus situated in Vangali village of Sabbavaram Mandal and the old campus located in the Gandhigram area.
